This week I’ve decided that I’m gonna be a little more international and do an album that’s not entirely in English, so I’ve chosen Molotov’s Con Todo Respeto. This one really rocks and I had to write about this one because it’s a cover album with some random songs that sound pretty kick ass in Spanish, Marciano (I turned into a Martian by The Misfits) is a great song to begin with, and it just sounds pretty funny with a Cumbia sound.

Even in English Girls by The Beastie Boys is funny and as Chavas in Spanish it makes the song seem fresh to me again… especially after having to hearing it on a moronic rotation every day since I was a kid growing up in So Cal. It seems the lyrics are pretty much the same, but it’s funny that they used the Caló slang word for girl, “Chava”.

Growing up I spent allot of time with my Grandma, and she use to have me do chores around the house. She would feed me things like burritos or hotdogs, and when I would get mouthy she would slap me or scold me talking like that around her. So when I heard Molotov sing Agüela I laughed my ass off because it was almost exactly like my life growing up and mash up they did with Young MC’s Bust a Move just pushed it way over the top for and made it that much better.

I really enjoyed this album and that's why I'm telling you all PASS IT ON

Every so often there’s a song that really catches you because of another sound it reminds you of. When I first heard This Lullaby by Queens of the Stone Age it reminded me of Tom Waits with the gruff sounding vocals and simple sounding guitar… hell even the lyrics gave me that impression.

When I followed through with this album I got allot more catchier songs, that I would be able to listen to for years later. Little Sister caught me with the cowbell at the beginning, because no one does that any more, unless it’s during a live album. The drums continue to kick ass throughout the whole song till the guitar solo kicks in at 1:01.

Ending songs can sound really cool and still kick ass, Queens of the Stone Age do that with Long Slow Goodbye… this one was really good and ends the album well, but then again this band always closes strong. This song really makes you want more, and the band later did deliver another great album eventually.

At the end of the Year I'm playing to do something a little different from normal, hope you folks will dig it... but till then keep listening to The Pinata Hour and remember to PASS IT ON

This week’s choice is kind of a special selection… namely as this band, just recently announced that they are calling it quits R.E.M.; I wasn’t really into R.E.M. but I liked enough to not complain when I heard them on the radio. But whenever I hear Bang and Blame it reminds me of hanging out in dark arcades in the middle of the day (because I would ditch school). The guy who owned the place had a jukebox that he used to play that song all the time while I was playing Turtles in Time. Man I miss video arcades; I use to spend a good portion of my days playing video games in those dark noisy places…

By the way whatever happened to the music video? They use to be awesome and weird, before they became elaborate dance routines or boring rappers driving slow throwing money at hookers… Crush with Eyeliner was a cool video; it was kinda trippy to me because, I remember R.E.M. being a bunch of white dudes, but in the video there was an Asian dude singing the song with Michael Stipe in the background at a restaurant. Kind of confused me a bit but it was a good song anyways.

Most light hearted movies I see as of late like a John Cusack movie always has the song “What's The Frequency, Kenneth?” playing during a montage in the movie of the main character working on something difficult like painting a house or something. It’s a good song that I think should be taken out of that boring formula… I’m just saying...there is way more potential in this song to further a plot; that’s just my opinion.

Ok so back in the day before everybody finally discovered The Pixies, I use to listen to Rodney on Roq just to hear crazy sounds before they were on the regular rotation. Where is my mind is the first song I remember listening to back in like 1994… yeah I know Rodney at the time use to come on before and after Loveline at the time, but his show was the best where you could find awesome bands like The Pixies.

Yeah I know everybody knows that song from Fight Club great movie, but there were more songs on that album than just that one like Gigantic. I love this song it really reminds of the time I spent alone after high school working as a security in a little shack in the industrial side of Brea. I had only a little boombox to pass the time and it only played stations from San Diego or AM stations… go figure. But the cool thing about that boombox, was that it had a tape deck that I could play my Rodney on the Roq mixtape, the Pixies were on that tape more than once I can say for sure.

Yeah I’m kinda fixated on the 90’s era of music… well it’s because that’s the era I grew up in, and the decade that followed it didn’t have anything that got my attention (well at least on the radio). That period had allot moody music and strange sounds that haven’t really been repeated since like Brick is Red… something about this song really sounds like that period of time. Weezer kinda has that sound in some of their old songs and the way that the guitar hums at 1:03 really sounds like something Blur would do.

Ok so the Pinata Hour is back so you should listen to Lee do interviews and play music that is too badass for the radio...

This week seemed difficult for the most part to write about an album that struck me… everyone has allot of suggestions, but nothing they recommended hit me as what I wanted to write about. Like most times I’ll hear a song and that’ll strike me and that’ll be the inspiration for the week. While standing in the local brewery waiting for my growler to be filled up I could hear Kabuki Girl playing the background and thought it’s been a long time since I’ve listened to the Descendants.

The Descendants are a great “Underground Punk Band” that I’m glad didn’t really get lumped into the green day shit… they had way more angst songs than most of the other bands at the time Hope is one of those songs that I think most guys have felt about a girl that never comes around… unrequited love is a story most everyone that is human has felt. This one kind of makes it seem like there’s a mistake that’s being made but that doesn’t matter because things will work out in the end because they’re won’t be any judgments.

Bikeage has that same fell to it, I remember back in the day I had a girl that I really l loved, but never told her and she tore herself down throughout the years. These lyrics really seem to speak the words that I would later tell her years later, after I got tired of watching her fall apart… later on in life she cleaned up and became productive in her life (shit she’s probably more straight edge than I am now). Some of these albums I choose are almost a catalog of my emotions and experiences through the years… funny thing about this one, are that I didn’t even hear the entirety of this one till about 5 years ago... so you should all PASS IT ON!!!

Pinata Hour is making a come back and you should listen DAMMIT!!!

The King Khan & BBQ Show... Invisible Girl

There are very few bands that can do an older style of music and still make it kick ass. King Khan and BBQ Show make it their own, with their crazy lyrics that are just ridiculously funny and catchy hooks that make you want to sing along with music. Just like the title song Invisible Girl great sing along and the lyrics aren’t ridiculous almost like if this was a cover of a song from the early 60’s… like a real kinda love song.

Some of these songs really put a smile on my face like Animal Party; I remember singing this song one time when I was riding around with my friend Bisou and she was laughing at the lyrics and me singing. She liked the song so much that after the song finished played the song 2 more times afterwards and during the last song she sang along to, it was funny.

If you know me you probably already know what my favorite band is The Misfits, just by looking at my tattoo. When I hear songs that have that kind of flavor to them it will more than likely get my attention. Truth or Dare is a perfect example of the crunchy sounding guitars and dark vocals. I can almost imagine Danzig singing this song back in the day. It sounds like Devils Whore to me in many way, I'm guess that's the hook that gets me again.

Over the years when ever I feel like being obnoxious, drop in Circle Jerks Group Sex. Every song has that teenage obnoxious feel to it, everything I lived with back in the day. Like the song Deny Everything, seems like something I would tell myself back in the day to get out of something stupid. Yeah back in the day I could be hella obnoxious for the stupidest things.

The obnoxious feeling in that song, carries over for me in to Wasted… because every time I’d wake up from a crazy night or when a girlfriend would get mad at me for drinking. I’d just fade away into my head to play that song over and over again (Maybe because its only like 43 seconds long)… that always made me laugh, no one should ever try to change anyone, it’s just a waste of time and energy.

And as things have been going on lately Live Fast Die Young, seems appropriate. Not that I’m suicidal or anything like that, just that people in general are pretty stupid if you ask me. So when it comes to the line “I don't wanna live, to be thirty-four, I don't wanna die, in a nuclear war” it seems very appropriate given the madness of life lately.
